What Desk Size Actually Fits a UK Wall?
Desk listings quote width and depth as though the room is infinite. What you need to know is what fits against a specific wall once the door, the radiator and your chair have taken their share.
The short answer
On a 2.4 m wall, buy a desk no wider than 160 cm. On the 2.15 m minimum-width wall of a UK single bedroom, 140 cm is the practical ceiling.
Leave at least 20 cm of total slack for skirting boards, plug sockets and the fact that British walls are rarely square. Depth matters more than width, and 60 cm is enough if you use a monitor arm.
Match the desk to the wall
These are working figures, not regulations. The wall widths on the left come from UK space standards, which is why they are the ones you keep running into.

Measure at desk height, not floor level. Skirting boards steal 1–2 cm each side, and a radiator or boxed-in pipework can take 10 cm more. The number that matters is the clear span at roughly 75 cm from the floor.
Measure these before you order
Ten minutes with a tape measure prevents the single most common furniture return.
The third one catches people out. A standard UK internal door is 76 cm wide and swings into the room, sweeping an arc that no desk corner may occupy. If the door opens onto your only long wall, your usable span is shorter than the wall itself.

Up to about 160 cm. Leave roughly 20 cm of total slack for skirting boards, sockets and walls that are not perfectly square, and check nothing protrudes at desk height.
Is a 60 cm deep desk enough?
Yes, provided you use a monitor arm. A monitor stand eats around 20 cm of that depth, which is what makes a 60 cm desk feel cramped. Clamp the screen instead and the depth is comfortable.
How much space do I need behind the desk for a chair?
Between 75 and 80 cm from the desk edge to whatever is behind you. Below that the chair cannot be pushed back far enough to stand up without turning sideways.
Should I buy a corner desk for a small room?
Rarely. Corner desks use two walls and a large floor footprint to deliver less usable surface than a straight desk of the same cost. They suit larger rooms with an awkward alcove, not box rooms.
Do standing desks need more space?
Not more floor space, but check the retracted height clears any windowsill or radiator shelf, and that the cable run has enough slack to travel the full range without pulling.
