Your data

Privacy Policy

SetupFind is a reader-funded publication, not a data business. We collect as little as we can get away with, we do not sell anything about you, and this page sets out exactly what is gathered, why, and how to get it removed.

Who we are

SetupFind is an independent technology publication covering desk, studio, gaming, podcasting and streaming equipment. It is operated as a sole trader based in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, and is the data controller for the information described on this page. You can reach us at our contact page.

Information you give us

  • Contact form. If you message us, we receive the name, email address and message you submit, so that we can reply and keep a record of corrections raised.
  • Newsletter. If you subscribe, we store your email address and the date you signed up. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link.
  • Comments and correspondence. Anything you choose to send us by email is stored in that mailbox.

Information collected automatically

  • Server logs. Our host records standard request data including IP address, browser and device type, referring page and timestamps. This is used for security, abuse prevention and diagnosing faults.
  • Analytics. We use privacy-respecting page analytics and Google Search Console to understand which guides people find useful and which search queries bring them here. This is reported to us in aggregate.
  • Cookies. See the section below.

We do not ask for, and have no use for, your date of birth, your address, your phone number or your payment details.

Cookies and similar technologies

TypePurpose
EssentialPage caching and basic site function. These cannot be switched off without breaking the site.
AnalyticsAggregate measurement of page views and traffic sources.
AffiliateSet by retailers and affiliate networks when you click a product link, so that a resulting purchase can be attributed to us.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. Blocking analytics and affiliate cookies does not restrict any content on this site.

Affiliate links

Some product links earn us a commission. When you follow one, the retailer or network may set a cookie in your browser. We do not receive your name, your payment information, or an itemised record of what you personally purchased. What reaches us is aggregate commission reporting. The full explanation is on our Affiliate Disclosure page.

Why we are allowed to process this (legal bases)

  • Consent: newsletter subscriptions and non-essential cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legitimate interests: keeping the site secure and available, understanding aggregate readership, and replying to messages you send us.
  • Legal obligation: where we are required to retain records or respond to a lawful request.

Who we share it with

We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for other organisations' marketing. Data is processed on our behalf by the service providers that make the site work: our web host, our email and newsletter provider, our analytics provider, and the affiliate networks whose links appear on the site. Each acts under its own privacy terms and only for the purpose we engage it for.

International transfers

Some of these providers operate outside the UK and European Economic Area, including in the United States. Where data is transferred internationally, it is done under the safeguards those providers maintain, such as standard contractual clauses or an approved adequacy framework.

How long we keep things

  • Newsletter subscriptions: until you unsubscribe, then removed from the active list.
  • Contact messages: up to 24 months, so we can trace the history of a correction.
  • Server logs: a short rolling window set by our host, typically measured in weeks.

Your rights

Under UK and EU data protection law you can ask us to give you a copy of the personal data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict how we use it, or object to that use. You can also withdraw consent for marketing at any time. If you are in California or another US state with comparable legislation, you have equivalent rights to know, delete, correct and opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share it in the first place.

To exercise any of these, message us through the contact page. We aim to respond within 30 days. If you are unhappy with the outcome and are in the UK, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office; readers in the EEA can complain to their national supervisory authority.

Children

SetupFind is written for adults buying equipment and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes we update the date at the top of the page. Material changes to how we handle your data will be flagged to newsletter subscribers rather than made quietly.

Questions about your data

Requests to access or delete your information are handled by the same person who writes the guides. There is no ticket queue and no form to fight with.
