Studio Monitors vs Headphones in a Small Room

The usual advice is that monitors are for professionals and headphones are a compromise. In a small British bedroom that is close to backwards, and the reason is physics you can calculate yourself.

The short answer

In an untreated room under about 12 m², buy headphones first. Monitors in a small untreated room tell you confident lies about the low end.

Ideally you end up with both and cross-check between them. But if you are choosing one, a £120 pair of headphones in a bad room beats £400 monitors in the same room, because the room never touches the headphones.

The Physics

Why small rooms lie about bass

Every room resonates at frequencies set by its dimensions. The formula is simple: the speed of sound, 343 metres per second, divided by twice the dimension. Run it on a normal British bedroom and the problem becomes obvious.

Those frequencies sit squarely where bass guitars, kick drums and 808s live. At a resonance, the room either reinforces the note or cancels it depending on where your head is. Move half a metre and the same bass line changes volume dramatically.

This is why small-room mixes so often come out bass-heavy. You sat in a null, could not hear the low end, turned it up to compensate, and the mix arrived at everyone else’s ears with far too much bottom.

The honest recommendation is to own both and switch between them, because their weaknesses are opposites. If the budget only stretches to one, start with headphones and put the money you saved into treating the room — then monitors become worth buying.

Straight answers

Can I mix entirely on headphones?

Yes, and plenty of released music has been. Check the result on a phone speaker, a car and a pair of earbuds before you commit, because headphones exaggerate stereo width and you can end up with a mix that collapses in mono.

What size monitors for a small room?

Five-inch drivers or smaller. Larger monitors produce more low end than a small untreated room can handle, which makes the room modes worse rather than giving you more information.

Open-back or closed-back headphones?

Closed-back for recording, because they stop the backing track leaking into your microphone. Open-back for mixing, since they sound more natural and are less fatiguing. If you can only have one and you record vocals, buy closed-back.

Do monitor stands really matter?

More than most accessories. Putting monitors directly on the desk couples them to the surface and colours the sound. Stands or isolation pads are cheap and make an audible difference.

How far apart should monitors be?

Form roughly an equilateral triangle with your head, with the tweeters at ear height. In a narrow room you may not have the width for this, which is another argument for headphones.
